Our visit to Barn Joo, which describes itself as a Korean-inspired gastropub, was mixed. The food was tasty, but the space was too loud to enjoy our meal. The dining room was packed during our lunch time visit, so it should give a good estimation of what one can expect during a busy dinner service. The space has high ceilings, which usually helps with dissipating sound, but there are hard surfaces everywhere and the background music, while not deafening, was loud enough to compel fellow diners to talk over it. This should not be unexpected. There’s even a name for this phenomenon: “The Lombard Effect.”
There were odd peaks and valleys with the noise levels at Barn Joo. At times, for a few minutes at most, it was almost pleasant, but then the noise would begin to raise in waves, joined by the rumbling of the subway below, and the space was smothered by the din. Avoid.
